Racism in schools: the real picture

The government has not required schools to record racist incidents since 2012. So we are asking the people who see it every day: parents, carers, relatives and educators of children in nurseries and primary schools across the UK.

About this campaign

Our petition asks for mandatory anti-racism training for all staff in UK nurseries and schools. This survey focuses on nursery and primary age, where it starts. When it reaches 10,000 signatures the government has to respond, and they may point to the Equality Act 2010. The law has been in place for 16 years. This is what has happened under it.

95%of young Black people have heard racist language at school (YMCA)
55,000suspensions for racist abuse in England's schools since 2021 (DfE)
+8%rise in racist-abuse suspensions in 2024/25, while suspensions overall fell
0legal duty on schools to report racist incidents since 2012

Those are the official numbers. They do not show what parents and teachers live through. Your answers will: the share of children affected, how young it starts, how often it happens again after the school is told, and whether anyone at the school has been trained to deal with it.

  • Build a UK-wide picture, by nation and council area.
  • Put real percentages and real stories in front of the Department for Education.
  • Show why "the Equality Act covers it" is not an answer.
